The Doc's CG Outing

A few weeks ago, the Doc brought me to meet his CG (i.e. Clinical Group) friends from Med School for a round of board games and dinner at Settlers Cafe. It was also a chance to celebrate birthdays and catch up with one another since the guys were in army and the rest were doing a new posting at different hospitals or areas.

Here are some photos I took of them while they were playing this game called Grable and Luck of the Draw.

The Gang of Doctors
The Birthday Girls

Sarah Lee

Sarah Lee, is Ben and Gen's daughter and sister to Master Caleb Lee.

The Doc and I attended a birthday party thrown by her parents yesterday at their place as representatives of her God-Ma who is currently in BKK. We also attended as friends of her parents as well as fans of thediaryofanewdaddy .

Dressed in a pretty pink frock, Sarah was fresh from a nap and in a happy mood, mingling with all the numerous aunties and uncles who were more than happy to play with her.

Gor Gor Caleb was also busy playing hosts to the many little children invited to the party. He even helped ND in the giving out of door gifts for the kiddies who attended, remembering the names of each and everyone of them (impressive!). He also made the Doc's day by offering him one of the gifts. However, much to the Doc's dismay but glee, ND told Caleb that gor gor Chew Chew is a MAN not a BOY. But well, the little boy in him was already pleased.

It was quite fun watching all the kiddies running around and socializing amongst themselves. I guess you could say it was organised chaos. As I hung around at Ben and Gen's house and did my favourite past time of people watching, I realised how relaxed all the parents were. They were unfazed by the kids, taking everything in stride. I guess they were used to noise, mess and kiddies zooming around. Quite a sight.. =)

You better start to run
If not you will have to go to Isetan

To buy bigger clothes with 'lastic bands
That will not show the bulge
Of the added weight we put on from the
Christmas Lunch!
The Christmas Lunch!

So... from your friendly nurse, Enjoy the food but in acceptable portions yeah. =)

Merry Christmas!

What is romance?

Definition of Romance \rō-ˈman(t)s, rə-; ˈrō-ˌ\
Function: noun

1 a (1): a medieval tale based on legend, chivalric love and adventure, or the supernatural (2): a prose narrative treating imaginary characters involved in events remote in time or place and usually heroic, adventurous, or mysterious (3): a love story especially in the form of a novel b: a class of such literature

2: something (as an extravagant story or account) that lacks basis in fact

3: an emotional attraction or aura belonging to an especially heroic era, adventure, or activity

4: love affair

5capitalized : the Romance languages

Scouring the internet for a definition of 'Romance' didnt give me sufficient answers to my question. What is romance?

If I were to ask you what romance is, I know I would get varied answers. Man think romance is nonsense while woman long for romance. It's one of those commonly written topics in books like, 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' books.

Is romance about roses, chocolates and sweet nothings? Is romance sustainable in a relationship? Is romance an idealistic concept that all woman should not entertain? Granted, romance has been extremely over hyped by film makers in Hollywood. But surely, romance does exists in this world even if its not as portrayed in films.

L.A. Hunter is apparently a romance expert and author and this is what she says,

'Romance is the creation of an atmosphere where she feels unconditional love and appreciation. You can turn down the lights, turn on the radio, take her by the hand and ask her to dance in the kitchen. That's romance.

Hand her a wild flower, ask her to go on a stroll with you and hold hands. That's romance. Get it? What is she feeling; at that moment she is the most important woman in the world, she feels appreciated and loved. Romance can even produce the butterflies in her stomach.'

Gals, do you agree? I do. I believe that romance can happen anywhere without costing much, without too much elaboration. It's the simple gestures that makes a woman feel loved that is considered romance. true some women out there might not agree with me about that but I believe that at the end of the it is the yearning to be loved and cherished by someone.. to be romanced...

Xmas Lunch

Christmas is a busy time for my family. We have the usual get together on both sides, parties we organise for our friends (depending on the time we have) as well as the numerous gatherings, presents etc. to look into.

It is a tradition of my Mum's to bring her parents for a Xmas lunch. This year, she brought them to the Olive Restaurant at Hotel InterContinental for a buffet lunch. It was quite a large group this year as our whole family went (thats 4 of us) plus my 2 cousins. So that was 6 adults and 2 children.

There was a ton of food to eat, from sushi, smoked salmon, salads, assortment of cheeses to turkey and ham (it is christmas), soups, main courses and of course deserts! it was just too much food and over indulgence.. oh and we had free flow of orange juice and lemonade plus coffee and tea!

Didnt take any photos of the food guys sorry about that cos i think it's a little rude to be taking photos of food at nice restaurants.. Anyway, here's a photo of my grandma with Trisha. and another one of the 4 of them.

Being extremely full from lunch, all i had for dinner was this drink at Starbucks called Carrot Medley which looked dubiously orange.

Anyway, ordered it while Tingni had a quiche and a much needed coffee while we chatted before attending a free accappella concert at the Esplanade by Agapella (i think thats how it's spelt) where i also met Christine, Huaiyang and the FR boys all doing their own thing but all happening to be at the same place.. funny...

Picnik and photo editing

Once in a while, when I find the 'current' and spare time, I like to edit the photos I take, adding character to the photos. Many people do this to all their pictures to enhance their quality but well, I'm lazy. and i have a short attention span. here's one that i did using Picnik. It was featured in today's digital life and i find it very easy to use for those who are beginners at photo editing. This offers you an easy application with impressive results!

By the way, thats the Doc in his cadet haircut and plastic black glasses if you didnt recognise him. This one above is a photo of me during my melbourne days with from left: Yuying, Kathy and Esther.

food, food and more food

Singaporeans are well fed folks. They love their food, love trying new places, love the satisfaction of finding good and cheap eats. For the foodies at heart who happen to be bloggers as well, they blog and take photos about it to share with other Singaporean foodies via the world wide web.

this recent surge in food bloggers is great. If you want to try something new, just hop online to one of their blogs and you will find all sorts of restaurants reviewed depending on whose blog you go to. Some focus on cheap Singapore fare, like hawker centers, coffeeshops etc. while others are more what we call 'atas' in Malay, with their almost daily entries about the newest restaurant in Singapore, the best place for Italian, brunch, ambience, chilling out, kids friendly, tea selections, English tea with scones and cake, buffets etc. The lists goes on and on...

What's more, if you are craving for say, a particular food and you are 'gian' to try a new place instead of going back to your usual kopitiam downstairs or your usual Western restaurant, just go to the blogger's categories and let your eyes and your taste buds and salivation test lead you to a tried and tested scrumptious meal.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be posting their blog links here but i'm pretty sure you can look for them by just googling and using the right key terms. say for example, food reviews + singapore + blogspot How do i know? Because I have been done it before!

Yes, i admit the Tan family and the Doc are benefiters. These passionate bloggers, who love to write, eat and very importantly take photos with good cameras (must have micro function) have made it easier for us to try out new places with better satisfaction.. more hits and fewer misses. Even before the era of blogging, we have been a family to try new places based on recommendations by word of mouth or via the media or credit card promotions. While these methods of knowing still remains the general means for the older folk in the family, the younger folk have embraced the power of food blogging, especially one Tan in particular (not me).

Since I'm not exactly a foodie (i still am in comparison to others but not as great as the other extreme) I dont really find joy in reading them unless a reasons calls for it. Reading these blogs actually makes me hungry and I dont wish for that..

But since I like to eat at new places and bring the Doc to interesting places on weekends for his 'da chi da he' (translation: big eat big drink) i admit i have been 'leeching' / 'sponging' off this Tan's wealth of information on good places to eat for the past few weeks and over-indulging in rich food.

With Chris and Jilyn, I went to The White Rabbit, My sis and the Doc to Riders Cafe, the Doc to Tampopo, and with all the above to Persimmon Cafe. All these were done in the span of 2 weeks so you can imagine how much rich food i have eaten considering that the one person who went for all 4 was ME!

1) The sign just at the bend before entering into Riders Cafe Carpark

2) The entrance

3) The Doc's Full Breakfast /Brunch 4) Pancakes (very yummy)
5) Chris & Jilyn at Persimmon

6) Lovely table for 20 at Persimmon with orange chairs. We actually saw Nadya Hutagalung using this table for her jewelery sale while we were there... we all declared her to be a beauty! 7) The Doc and I - being silly

8) My sis , looking extremely pleased and happy after her Standard Chartered Run and of course her pasta dish in front of her.
9) One of the many dishes we had (it's an ala carte buffet), laksa pesto pasta

Sakae Sushi with mom and sis though not from the food blogs, was another meal that i would consider indulgence.

My mom and my sis's spontaneous pose as we walked to Big Splash via the underpass.

Decisions decisions...
same thing here.. decisions decisions
one of the sides i picked up from the conveyor (so so only)

But well, it's all done.. the food has been eaten, taste buds have been tingled and money has been spent. The company that i went with for all the above enjoyed themselves tremendously so I would say, its a good cause!

note from gracie-buddy: the other photos are in my compact camera so it'll come soon.. Akan datang!

Essence of a Woman

I will be telling a lie if I were to tell love ones, friends and the world in general that I do not struggle with being a woman.. or more specifically being a beauty for that's how God made each and every woman on this planet Earth. I should not be saying to myself, 'That should be enough" but i Should be saying, 'it is enough'.

Like every other woman (come on admit it.. there is something in your looks or body that you dont really like), I find myself toying, struggling, grasping the concept of being enough, being content in beauty. Somehow, I cant.

And most man cannot understand why we struggle so much with being slimmer, prettier, less freckly, tanned, fair, nicer legs, (fill in the blanks). You know, its funny.. the doc constantly tells me that he loves me for who I am and not just my physical attributes. That should make me happy right? but like many others, my mind has sent me this message instead... "So he doesnt like what you look like lah, he is more proud of you for who you are rather than what you look like"

And hahah.. you know, no matter how much he and I tell myself that is not what he meant, it is an extremely nagging pressure in my brain that tries constantly to reinforce this lie.

Why am I even writing this entry?
I have been a blogger for quite a number of years now but if you have been following my blog for awhile, you would notice that my blog entries usually talk about general issues at large, happenings in my life, random rants and reflections on things i see in life. Every entry topic is thought through and assessed and determined whether it's too emotional, send wrong signals, too personal, too bitchy (excuse my language), or will someone else get hurt because of what i wrote. I tend not air my emotions and grievances on the blog .

But I'll make a little exception this time and talk about my struggle with feeling beautiful, being happy with how i look and yes yes.. i have loss quite a bit of weight in Melbourne, no i'm not anorexic (seriously...) and I just want to be happy with how I look and know that e doc and others can be proud of me.

Living in a world of knowledge, I have read books, attended seminars, conferences catered to women specifically about being beautiful, being princesses and being content with who you are cos God made us and He considers us beautiful, regardless of what we think about ourselves.

I guess I just wanted to remind of you gals out there, just as I was reminded today that beauty does dwell in each and everyone of us (regardless of age, wrinkle lines and fats).

For my male readers, dont forget to keep acknowledging the beauty that God has placed around you, especially close friends and loved ones. Simple statements like, 'you look pretty today', 'nice dress, i think it really makes you look stunning' or 'have i ever told you that you that you are beautiful? believe in it cos God made you and He thinks you're beautiful!' will really help in non-cheesy situations (you must know when to say it too lah... its an art).

But we do need to be healthy and not swing to extremes. But that is another story and topic all together.

Here's the article that triggered this whole blog entry.

The Essence of a Woman
12/02/2008

When we speak about the essence of a woman – her beauty – we don’t mean “the perfect figure.” The beauty of a woman is first a soulish beauty. We know – it’s a harder jump to make. We’ve lived so long under the pressure to be beautiful. But stay with the thought for a moment, because it will really help. The beauty of a woman is first a soulful beauty. And yes, as we live it out, own it, inhabit our beauty, we do become more lovely. More alluring. As the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote, “Self flashes off frame and face.” Our true self becomes reflected in our appearance. But it flows from the inside out.

The essence of a woman is Beauty. She is meant to be the incarnation – our experience in human form – of a Captivating God. A God who invites us.

“You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride;
you have stolen my heart
with one glance of your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.
You are a garden fountain,
a well of flowing water
streaming down from Lebanon.” (Songs 4:9, 15)

Beauty is what the world longs to experience from a woman. We know that – somewhere down deep, we know it to be true. Most of our shame comes from this knowing and feeling that we have failed here. So hear this: Beauty is an essence that dwells in every woman. It was given to her by God. It was given to you.

Surely you would agree that God is nothing if not beautiful.

All around us God’s creation shouts of his beauty and his goodness. The way snow creates a silhouette of lace on a barren tree, the rays of sun streaming forth from a billowing cloud, the sound of a brook trickling over smooth stones, the form of a woman’s body and the face of a child anticipating the arrival of the ice cream truck all speak of God’s good heart if we will have but the eyes to see. The coming of spring after a hard winter is almost too glorious for a soul to bear. God’s beauty is lavished on the world.

Beauty may be the most powerful thing on earth. Beauty speaks. Beauty invites. Beauty nourishes. Beauty comforts. Beauty inspires. Beauty is transcendent. Beauty draws us to God.

A woman in her glory, a woman of beauty, is a woman who is not striving to become beautiful or worthy or enough. She knows in her quiet centre where God dwells that He finds her beautiful, has deemed her worthy and in him, she is enough. In fact, the only thing getting in the way of our being fully captivating and enjoyed is our hiding and striving.

So Jesus says, “I will quiet you with My love” (Zephaniah 3:17). A woman of true beauty is a woman who in the depths of her soul is at rest; trusting God because she has come to know Him to be worthy of her trust. She exudes a sense of calm; a sense of rest; and invites those around her to rest as well. She speaks comfort; that all is well; that all will be well. A woman of true beauty offers others the grace to be and the room to become. In her presence, one can release the tight sigh that so often grips our hearts, and breathe in the truth that God loves us and he is good.

This is why we must keep asking. Ask Jesus to show you your beauty. Ask him what he thinks of you as a woman. His words to us let us rest. And unveil our beauty.

Photos

This photo was sent to me a few days ago by PS. It's a photo taken during Keiko's graduation and I thought it was a really beautiful shot of all my Melbourne Singapore/Malaysian friends that i got to know this year when i moved to the city. It's formal, and not quite like our other crazy photos like this one.. which i also received a few days ago...

I sent an email back asking what the numbers mean and i got a reply from Peter (seated on the extreme right on the red couch) that i'm suppose to guess the age of each one or something like that. i looked at the photo again and i still couldnt figure it out! gee.. these people..

=) they are a great bunch.. if any of you are reading this, i hope you guys know that, you guys are a great bunch! Foodies, great cooks at heart...remember to eat more fruits on my behalf, the fruit monster!

Parking Scare

I have always prided myself in being a good parker when it comes to parking my car. Today however, that wasnt so.

In the past few weeks, there has been numerous constructions happening around my estate; both private renovations and the upgrading of the area with the coverage of drains. This meant that there are alot of heavy duty vehicles parked along the narrow two car width road outside our houses. and with all these extra vehicles on our already car filled roads (everyone parks their car outside, very few park them inside as its no easy feat to do that), the number of spaces available became less.

This week, e doc loaned me his car for the week so that I can use it and get around if I needed to. This meant that there was an extra car located on our roads. When I came home today, I was asked to move the car to another spot since they had to hack the roads. Since there wasnt any other lot available nearby, I decided to park the car inside the house a huge decision since i knew it wasnt going to be easy and doable one shot. But i had to try nevertheless.

As expected when i turned head in first, my angle of the car was wrong and it resulted in me having to make numerous reverses and slow progression, always hindered by the fear of scratching the sides. Seeing that I decided to drive in, my dad came out to give me directions but he was so vague he was of no help! I didnt know which way to turn my steering wheel, how much to turn. instead of instructing me how to turn, my dad just asked me to come out and let him do the driving.

As i reversed and drove the car into an angle that would allow me to get out so that my dad could take over the wheel, I suddenly realised that the car was in the right angle and that both sides could get through the gate without touching it and gettin the car scratched!

Extremely relieved and happy, I steered the car in with ease and proud of myself for having learnt and tried something new today! yippeee!!! (and phew! no scratch on e doc's car)

Support for the hurt

While reading Job Chapter 2 for QT today, God reminded me that He gives instructions on providing support to friends who are hurting, depressed, sad etc. It's stated right there in this chapter.

"Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great." - Job 2: 13.

Upon hearing about Job's medical condition (sore boils on his whole body), Job's friends Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar arranged to meet and visit him. When they saw his plight, they wept and cried out loud for his situation and for 7 days and 7 nights they did nothing, said nothing but just accompanied him as he was in great pain.

I believe that this is still true today that in the period where greatest pain is experienced, all we have to do as friends is to be there, have empathy and say nothing. Presence alone is often sufficient in providing support in times like these.

Hong Kong

Dear all,

I just returned from a family holiday in Hong Kong after attending SCCC Staff Summit at JB Pulai Springs last week. Yes, I have been out of town quite often and even my exercise routine (whatever it comprises of...) has been disrupted by all this traveling around.

So anyway, my parents left for HK on Sunday afternoon while my sis and I left on Monday to meet them. It was a short getaway for all of us which actually began with only my parents. My sis couldnt resist the sounds of HK, what with dim sum and shopping.

It has been about 11 years since my last trip to HK, the last being with choir during my Dunman days which i dont really remember much of hence seeing HK was new to me. Upon arrival and after we cleared customs and picked up our bags, my sis and I took the express airport train as instructed the night before by our parents. Since the airport terminal was located on another island, the train took us across the sea towards Hong Kong Island and the view was absolutely spectacular! with mountainous areas as the city's backdrop, HK is a beautiful city of neon lights, compact high rise buildings and little streets filled with colour and character of the old mixed and blended in with the new - of modern skyscrapers and branded boutiques.

HK is well known for two things - Shopping and Eating. While the former was a little disappointing for us (wrong season and not exactly cheap), the food department was not a let down. As usual, my family overate. We tried all sorts of food, Hong Kong dim sum, char siew and siew yok, zi cha at the market, dou jiang, you tiao, puo luo bao, nai cha, dian ping and the list goes on and on.. Just typing it makes me feel absolutely full... (check out 'some' of the food we ate). AND they were all good.

For more photos of my trip, just go to the Tan family Hong Kong Trip 2008

Peranakan Museum

Having heard good reviews of the museum, I decided to take the opportunity of visiting it last Saturday since admission into the museum was only S$2. Originally, I was supposed to meet my parents there. But since I was running late and meeting the doc after, I ended up going on my own which was totally fine by me too.

Armed with my usual garb (i.e. sunnies, camera - compact and SLR) I took the bus 36 all the way to City Hall and walked. Sponsored by Explore Singapore, this was part of a bigger event held at Singapore's 27 museums. There was food, a bazzar, face painting, balloon sculpting etc... something for all. But since I went only at about 3.30pm, most of the events were over.

Housed in the old Tao Nan School at Armenian Street, the Peranakan Museum houses artifacts of the Peranakan way of life. ‘peranakan’ which means ‘locally born’ is a Malay term which refers to communities that developed in Southeast Asia. Peranakan Chinese are descendants of Chinese traders who settled in Malacca and around the coastal areas of Java and Sumatra, as early as the 14th century. In the 19th century, the Peranakan Chinese, drawn by commerce, migrated to the bustling ports of Penang and Singapore. It is a unique hybrid culture that is still part of Singapore’s living heritage, very much seen in my family. Hence, visiting the museum was interesting for me since I have heard about the way of life or still witness them in my family.

Take for example,
1) the Sarong Kebaya, worn by the ladies or Nonyas as they are called. My grandma and grandaunt still own sarong kebayas, that they were on special occasions like weddings.

Though not used commonly on a daily basis, I have seen some of the crockery on display at home as well. design of these crockery show a Chinese influence as well on the Peranakan culture. Have a look.

If you guys are bored of wandering the aisles of shopping centers, or watching movies, I would recommend visiting museums in Singapore is another alternative. It's informative, quite affordable and cooling (i.e. aircon). Try it. =) Be a tourist in your own home country.

Return from Staff Summit

This week, I havent been around in Singapore as I attended the SCCC (Singapore Campus Crusade for Christ) Staff Summit in Malaysia. David Eckman was the speaker at this conference and he was talking about Knowing the Father's Heart (am I right?... Cant exactly remember the title off hand right now).

Dont really know what to comment about the conference, just that it was nice getting away for a retreat as it helped me draw near to God again. I wouldnt say that the retreat was awesome for me, that it was a milestone in my life but it helped me to move on I must say, to be reaffirmed that God has really called me out of ForeRunner and into a new phase of life. Maybe its because I have been out of touch too but whatever the case, catching up with old friends and even making new ones in the Summit was a good practice for me of getting back into the groove of Singapore life.

the sub-reason i was there was also so that i could get some photography tips from the guru...The guru gave me an afternoon lesson about composition, light, aperture, shutter speed, etc so much so that my brain was swimming from all the information. I'm a slow learner but hopefully with more practice my pictures will come out better. Here are some of the shots taken at the Staff Summit...

* For the rest of the shots, please go to Steps of Grace

1) Evan, Shirley, Eliza at the Women's Afternoon with their prizes

2) Amber looking absolutely stunning

3) Ryan & his friend, the monkey

4) The Guru himself being e model for a change
