I'm sure many of us have come across the passage in Acts 4 a good couple of times in our Christian life. Me too..but yesterday, as I re-read Acts for my quiet time, I was once again amazed at what God did in the lives of the apostles.
Have a read of Acts 4 on your own. Check out the stars of the chapter, Peter and John.
I was especially drawn to Peter. As i was previously reading the gospels, Peter's character was fresh in my mind. hot-headed, rash, acts before he thinks... and the list goes on..He was the one who:
1. Disowned God three times
2. Cut off the ear of the guy in the garden
3. The guy who told Jesus to let him walk on water as well
4. The man who exclaimed to Jesus in response to Jesus's answer that he not only wanted his feet washed but his hands and his head as well.
But yet, he was the man whom jesus used mightily.
1. He was the man who was instructed to feed and take care of His sheep and lamb.
2. In Acts, Peter became the leader. he stood up to speak to the high priest in v8 of chapter 4, not on his own but with the power of the Holy Spirit. despite being an 'unschooled ordinary man' (v13, chpt 4).
3. we know from later books in the bible and from history that Peter went on to be the main apostle. History and facts today establish that. The Vatican City, in Rome for example.. the beautiful majestic building right in the centre of that small town is called St Peter's Basilica after Peter the rash one.
If God can use Peter, a man who is unschooled, ordinary with a flighty temper... he can use any of us. And someone God just loves to use those that we would never think of..or think that he or she does not have the capabilities/characteristics etc to be used. Ha. We're wrong.. Just check out Paul. =)
